Innovating Amazon User Experience

Creative Gym

Using Multiplication method, let's try innovating Amazon User Experience.

As a part of creative thinking methods you get trained in CreativeGym is called "multiplication technique". It is a powerful method that you can use internal components to bring some innovation. So let's try it.

Here's the overall process of the Multiplication technique.

  1. List up all components

  2. Pick a components and multiple (whatever amount)

  3. Alter some aspect of copied components

  4. Think of all kinds of benefits from company and end-user perspective.

  5. Ask if it's technologically possible.

First of all, you will list up components of Amazon's website.

  • Search bar

  • Product Listing

  • Product Page

  • Filters

  • Shopping Cart (button)

  • Add to Cart (button)

  • Wishlist

  • Shopping Cart (page)

  • Purchase flow (shipping, payment, place order)

  • Amazon logo

  • Product photo

  • Product Description

  • Price

  • Customer Rating and Reviews

  • Customer Questions & Answers

  • Related items

Ok, here's enough.

Second, let's pick a component randomly and multiply.

So let's say, we pick a Product Page

product-page.png

Then, we would randomly choose how many time we would multiply. This time we decided to multiply a couple of times.

Third, change the multiplied components in some ways, such as location, size, info, color, etc.

So,  we decided to change the 'content' of each Product page.

Fourth, think of any benefits from company and end-user point of views.

We noticed that we can compare detail product information with multiple product panes. It would be useful to because users don't need to leave the page to view other products, and still compare easily.

So, this is it! We came up with an idea very quickly about innovating a portion of Amazon's shopping experience.

Below is a quick mock up (aka: prototype) of how it would look and feel.

First, in order to launch the three column UI, we built a comparison button.

02.png

When you are ready go compare, you will hit the compare button with an arrow.

This is how three column product page could look like.

04.png

Just to mimic the experience, here's the movie of how three column works.

How do you like it? We felt it somewhat useful as  you get to see full detail of each products.

Ok, let's try multiplying other component.
This time, what if we multiple shopping carts?

By having 2 or 3 shopping carts, maybe you can compare the total shopping cost, or compare between shopping lists. I often put items in the cart, and use Save for later function to compare total pricing. But with multiple shopping carts, I could easily compare my entire expense and decide my best course of action.

Ok, so here are mock ups of multiple shopping carts. First, you would choose which shopping cart you want to put your item.

Then, here is how you would compare total spending with different shopping item combination.

Also, what if you can move items between shopping carts by just drag and drop? This would give users a lots of ways to compare the total expense and make a wise decision.

That's it for today. In this article, we showed how this simple multiplication method to bring innovation on Amazon user experience. Notice this method utilizes only their internal components to bring new changes. That means, company can use already acquired resources to bring innovation.

Solution to unproductive Q&A session

Solution to unproductive
Q&A session

• How to help introverts to ask questions?
• How to allows everyone to be engaged?

Have you experienced in a meeting where someone had asked if there is any question to participants but failed to have people raise hands?

or, have you experienced that you weren't engaged in Q&A sessions?

or, have you felt intimidated to raise hands in front of everyone?

In the art of workshop facilitation at CreativeGym, we teach an efficient way to conduct Q&A sessions.

Before giving you a solution, let me point out three major problems that we see in above contexts.

1: The setting allows only one person to ask the question at the time.

this means that next person has to wait until that question gets answered.

2: You are not engaged because you didn't ask any questions.

When you don't ask any questions, chances are that your brain doesn't participate in the Q&A sessions. But when you do think about questions, your brain pays more attention to the entire course.

3: The question itself is attached to a personal identity.

The act of raising hands and ask questions at loud means people know who ask what kind of questions. This is one of the reasons people hesitate asking questions in public settings.

Solution:

Circulate question sheets and give time to fill them in, then collect, organize (sometimes vote) and answer.

IMG_0647.jpg

Is that it? Is that simple? You probably knew this method and had experienced in the past? But do you really take time to do in meeting settings?

How it works:

1: Prepare sticky-note pads, blank sheets of paper, or cutout worksheets (see below) and pens for everyone.

Print out, cut and distribute

2: At the beginning of the meeting, distribute them to everyone and ask them to think of any questions during the meeting

3: Just before the Q&A time, give 2-3 minutes to encourage all participants to write at least one question.

4: Gather all question sheets, organize by related topics, identify popular topics

Optionally, if time allows, you can categorize them on a wall, and have everyone to vote their 3-5 most important questions with dot stickers or merely write stars on the sheet.

5: Start answering questions one by one, starting with most popular question

6: If time runs out, write brief answers and send out to all participants by email, etc within 48 hours.

It is essential to answer questions quickly before they forget about what they asked. And answering all unanswered questions promptly means the act of sincerity. Imagine your submitted question didn't get explained due to time. You would appreciate having it answered, right?

What if I am doing remote meeting?

If you are doing remote meeting, online collaboration tools Mural.co, Google doc, Google slides are my recommendation. They can semi-anonymously input questions. I highly recommend Mural collaboration tool.

Why it works:

1: It simultaneously gives everyone a chance to think/write his/her question.

Instead of raising hands and wait for your turn to ask, this method allows everyone to ask questions at the same time. This increase the speed.

2: When you write a question, you are more engaged.

And act of everyone thinking about his/her own question increase participation.

3: It gives phycological safety by stripping away attached identities from questions

This point is probably most important aspect. It allows everyone to feel safe about asking any questions without being put on the spot. It also allows questions to be treated equal manner since who asked the question become less visible.  (It is optional to write your name. )

That's all for today!

Creative Gym

In April 2017, CreativeGym planned and implemented a workshop for 120 people business people together with the largest Advertising agency in Japan as well as Event Production company. It was a part of a business conference to introduce licensed contents (such as well known games and animes) to encourage companies further to create more products and services with these contents. The purpose of the workshop was to ideate new products/services using one of their contents. All participants seemed to enjoy ideating tons of ideas. We had everybody to vote their favorite ideas and present awards for winners.
